Ballyvaughan-Letterkenny |
Today we drive 300 km from Ballyvaughan the west
coast via Galway and Westport to the north. |
Between Galway and Westport, the neo-gothic Kylemore
Abbey is nestled in a wooded area by a small lake. The castle was built
in 1860 by a wealthy industrialist for his wife. In 1920, Benedictines
acquired the battlemented magnificent building. |
We overnight in the town of Sligo. Before going to bed, let's have an Irish coffe. |
200km is today's stage from Sligo over Slieve League
to Letterkenny, 25km from the Northern Ireland border. 100km after
Sligo, the landscape gradually becomes mountainous until we finally
reach the semicircular Slieve League. The cliffs fall 600m steeply into
the sea. The magnificent view is also one of the highlights of our
Ireland tour. |
The castle "Glenveagh Castle". In the mid-19th
century, land speculator John George Adair built Glenveagh Castle. It
was to serve as a retirement home and hunting ground for George Adair.
However, this died early in 1885. |
At 18.00 o'clock we reach our pre-booked hotel in Letterkenny. Letterkenny is the largest town in County Donegal. |
