Salt Lake City - Antelope Island
In 1848 the Mormon leader Brigham Young officially founded the city of Salt Lake City. The Mormon Church still dominates the economy, culture and politics.
The Tabernacle with its oval dome is one of the most impressive buildings in Salt Lake City and offers first-class acoustics. The organ with almost 12,000 pipes is one of the largest in the world. Every Thursday evening the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearses here.
Before we head north to Yellowstone National Park, we make a worthwhile detour to an offshore peninsula in the Great Salt Lake called Antelope Island, named after an antelope hunt that took place here in 1845. Great Salt Lake is one of the most unusual geographical features in the West. With its enormously high salt content - only the Dead Sea has a higher one - the lake is a curiosity. It can neither be used as a drinking water reservoir nor as a bathing lake, has only sparse vegetation and no fish.
